Attendees of Masterclass – 10
On 12 January, Imperial English Azerbaijan organized the next session of a pilot project consisting of 18 modules, developed in accordance with international standards by renowned language specialists from various universities in the United Kingdom. The project was implemented with reference to the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev, dated 19 March 2025, on approval of the “Artificial Intelligence Strategy of the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2025–2028.”
The session was specifically designed and delivered by Dr. Joyce Lim, an internationally recognized expert who earned her PhD from the University of Oxford and is currently engaged in academic work in Applied Linguistics and TESOL at Aston University. Titled “Transforming Language Teaching with Artificial Intelligence: Practical Tools for Today’s Classroom,” the session addressed the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies on the education system in the contemporary era of accelerated digital transformation, highlighting their significant academic and pedagogical relevance. The training was intended for teachers, researchers, and individuals involved in academic activities.
The primary objective of the training was to explain the scientifically and pedagogically grounded use of artificial intelligence in language education, to present innovative approaches to designing personalized and learner-centered instruction, and to prepare learners for AI-driven educational environments.
In particular, the following areas were emphasized:
• clearly defining what artificial intelligence can and cannot do in education;
• examining how AI technologies support personalized and productive learning;
• strengthening teachers’ capacities to guide students toward conscious, ethical, and purposeful use of artificial intelligence;
• fostering students’ critical thinking, metacognitive, and ethical skills.
At the same time, during the training Dr. Joyce Lim addressed and clarified common misconceptions about artificial intelligence, such as the belief that “AI will replace teachers” and that “AI should be banned in education,” and articulated her personal position on these issues. Throughout the session, the advantages and limitations of artificial intelligence were discussed in depth, with particular emphasis on the teacher’s central and leading role in education and the function of AI as a supportive tool. Nevertheless, the development of artificial intelligence was overall evaluated as an important and positive advancement for the progress of education.

The training was conducted in an interactive format based on active engagement and mutual exchange of ideas. Participants did not limit themselves to theoretical knowledge; they also completed practical tasks in small groups and, through reflective questions and general discussions, analyzed the possibilities of applying AI tools in teaching as well as ways to mitigate potential negative consequences.
The masterclass, conducted through mutual dialogue and academic discussion, made a significant contribution to the development of participants’ critical thinking, analytical approaches, and reflective pedagogical skills. The training aimed to strengthen the connection between theoretical knowledge and practical applications related to the integration of artificial intelligence technologies into the teaching process. Such interactive and scientifically grounded trainings are of particular importance in promoting innovation in the education system, supporting teachers’ professional development, and enhancing the overall quality of instruction.
Participants who successfully completed the training program were awarded an International Certificate of Professional Training Completion by Imperial English UK and were granted the opportunity to participate in subsequent sessions as well as in an intensive and individualized training visit to the United Kingdom scheduled for 2026.
It should be noted that Imperial English Azerbaijan is the sole official representative in Azerbaijan of Imperial English United Kingdom, a company accredited in the United Kingdom by the British Council and OFQUAL – the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (the UK government body responsible for regulating qualifications and examinations). The organization provides support by sharing its expertise in teacher development and English language instruction with state institutions (such as the Ministry of Education), academic institutions (including lyceums, colleges, schools, universities, and language centers), as well as organizations (including public and private enterprises, industrial organizations, and non-governmental organizations).
